Papa Johns has 5,199 locations worldwide, with 4,456 franchised restaurants in all 50 states and 44 countries and territories. It had 500 stores a year later, and by 1997, it had opened 1,500. That same year, Papa Johns Pizza produced a pizza-specific dipping sauce, which has since become popular when eating pizza, particularly the crust. His pizzas were so successful that he relocated into an adjacent area a year later. He subsequently sold his 1971 Camaro Z28 to buy used pizza equipment for $1,600 and began serving pizzas to the tavern’s customers from the converted closet. In 1984, “Papa” John Schnatter knocked out a broom closet in the rear of his father’s pub, Mick’s Lounge, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, to start the Papa Johns restaurant.
